Hand Lettering | April desktop calendar

I've started using desktop calendars at work. I'm not sure what that means but it has happened. So, instead of searching the web for something pretty, I decided it was a perfect reason to do a little bit of hand lettering :D
If you have also become a desktop calendar user, you can grab it from my DropBox.

The letter S

More lettering + color! I busted out the awesome (and underused) Prisma markers to try a bit of new styling.  I like the results although there is definitely some technical refinery that needs to go on. I'm still not very good at manipulating the markers and layering the color.

Weekend

To soak in the warmth of the day, we managed to squeeze in the tiniest bit of yard work on Friday afternoon. We are tearing out an old landscaping path and it's kinda slow going since we have to be mindful of how much weight we are putting in the truck. Basically, we got just enough done to have me itching to get it finished. You can definitely apply the saying, "it gets worse before it gets better" to our yard.
Other than Friday afternoon though, it was just Toaster and I this weekend. If it looks like I spent all my time with this critter it's because I did. Keith worked all weekend so the pup and I got to have some quality time together.

Toaster got to meet the pigs my parents are raising. She wasn't too sure about them :)

Toaster

Friends, meet Toaster!

On Saturday we became puppy parents to this sweet little boxador.
We found her at a rescue through petfinder.com and spent all last week staring at her listing picture.  Now she is finally at home with us :) We think the little wrinkles on her forehead are just about the cutest thing ever.

Picture non-frames

Taking advantage of the picture shelf we added to the top of the board and batten.

The ability to layer without it looking bulky might be my favorite things about using the clipboards. But maybe it's the striking look of functional utility that they give to something that is normally so decorative.
Not to mention that it's super easy to swap out pictures and art as the mood strikes. Or that clipboards are abundant with lots of size and tone variation and can be painted.

There are quite a few clipboards that still need pictures and quite a bit of wall space that still needs boards so maybe there will be another post about this in the future...
I'm also thinking about using some in my craft room. Can you tell I have a bit of an infatuation?

It occurred to me that I should start incorporating color in my letterings :)

Put some primer on it - kitchen trim

When we moved in, our kitchen had 3 different colors and styles of trim. It was nice. There was the brown stained wood around the window, the painted white trim around the backhall door, and glossy black trim topping off the kitchen cabinets. All of which was accompanied and made infinitely more attractive by the flush hollow core doors.

Here is another view, a shot of our kitchen mid move-in.
*Please note the mini fridge, the microwave and the plastic grocery bag trash . Keith and I lived like proper college students using only those for a bit. It's crazy. You don't realize how much you actually use a stove until you don't have one. Fortunately, we have been blessed by our AWESOME friends and family and have been given appliances.

"Patching" a hole with masking tape. What can I say? We plan on upgrading the doors in a few years and just wanted a quick, easy fix.

Unifying the trim and door color was one of those quick fix, soothe-my-eyeballs-for-the-short-term things. There actually isn't a coat of paint involved - just 2 coats of primer. In a couple years we would like to give the entire kitchen and back part of the house an overhaul. We love the layout and size of the kitchen (and that it has a DOUBLE basin sink! Can I get a holla from everyone who knows about living with a single?) but that is about it. To put it simply, we are excited for the day when that back splash tile and red wood cabinets are gone. Until then though, we will enjoy our (mostly) matching trim and full size fridge.

We put some PAINT on it here...

thrifty nifty, pudding and pie

I love winter. I really do. But maybe, just maybe, I've had enough for one season. It actually makes me a bit nauseous that Wednesday's forecast includes snow. (Insert long, whiny "NOOOO" here.) Warmer weather can not get here fast enough. I blame that Home Work list for making me extra antsy for sunshine and spring breezes. We've gotst things to accomplish!
Not to mention that Keith and I have a front porch we have yet to use...

Anyways, making the house a home is a task that has me visiting thrift stores on the frequent. Possibly even more frequently than I used to, I dare say. The *problem* with thrifting though is that you never know what you will find. Sometimes it's the exact, awesome, house related thing you were looking for and sometimes it the most adorable polka dotted sundress.

1_ They are in desperate need of a bit of polish but I love the look of these shakers.

2_ Super cute sundress. It has polka dots. Need I say more?

3_ The hairpin legs on this end table / stool lured me in. The top is fades and ripped but once I figure out a "permanent" location for it (porch or living room??) recovering the top should be a fairly quick process. Since taking these pictures, I found what I think is a fondue pot stand with similar legs. With a bit of imagination and the right pot I think it will make an awesome plant stand so I'm leaning more and more toward the porch destination. But then again, maybe the living room... We really need to figure out our coffee table situation.

4_ Technically these Minnetonka boots weren't thrifted. They were ebayed. But it was cheaper than buying them brand new so that counts, right? Right?

Improving Home

This is a little portion of the craziness that is our Home Improvement list. "Portion" because I think there are lists in 3 or 4 other notebooks. [What can I say? I love lists!]
If only winter would end...

Stimpy pup

This weekend our sweet little Stimpy got hit by a car.
We will and are missing her so much.
