Livingroom mood board

Now that the walls in the living room have a fresh coat of paint my focus has turned to the furniture.
And pillows. Whoop whoop!I love a good pillow.

Livingroom Moodboard

Check out this mini mood board with a few faves.
If you'd like to see more feel free to scope out the full Pinterest board.

Keith and I are big fans of clean lines and bright colors but we also wanted to work with the style and structure of our house not against it. This has brought us to expand our interior decorating horizons and try new things. While moving slowly has helped us not to blow our money on things we don't really want, Pinterest has, by far, been the best thing to happen to our interior decorating mojo. I mean, let's be really here. How did we come up with ideas before that site?
So, as you can see, we've decided to go grey, with chartreuse/lime and mint as our accent colors. But, typical us, we have, oh, 4 or so other colors we'll be adding pops of. CANNOT wait to get it all finished and looking snazzy. One day at a time though, right?

With care

A few dozen or so Christmases ago, my great grandma made her family snazzy, felt, Christmas stockings. As the family grew, so did the number of stockings. At some point my Aunt became the stocking maker, stitching together countless cousin stockings.

Since these stockings are a the only ones I've ever known and pulling them out each year is a holiday necessity, I decided it was crucial that Keith get one and long, long over due that my immediate family's stocking collection be rounded out. Seriously, my dad has been waiting nearly 3 DECADES. So, on Christmas Eve the felt, sequins, and pinking shears were passed around and 3 man stockings were made. I say "man" stockings because you will note that the accent colors are reversed. We didn't intend for the guys to get white backgrounds and girls to have green. It just worked out that way with the felt we had on hand. Happy accident.

Oh, did I mention that we were up till 3 a.m. working on those 3 man stockings? It made for good memories (of a sleep deprived, sequin stingy mom that we couldn't help but snicker at) and a slow start on Christmas morning.

Ornament Swap 2013

Since Christmas is, uhhh, tomorrow, I figure it's about time I show off the Ornament Swap goods.

Ayla was my partner and she sent me these cute little bits of Christmas joy.

Now, as for what I sent to Ayla...
Just as I did last year, I busted out the sequins and thread to make something snazzy. Only this time I didn't make a pair of turtle doves, instead I stitched together a little painters palette just for fun.

Put some paint on it

A few weeks ago I showed you the brown on brown on brown glop that was our living room.
It is no more! Things have been changing colors around these parts. Getting lighter and brighter, if you will.
A couple weekends ago, Keith and I had a burst of ambition and decided to stay up all night to prep the living room walls for paint and then get up early and roll the paint on. It was a total fit of new-home-owner giddiness.

Pretend that those wet paint splotches above the mantle aren't there.
I'd just gone back with a brush and touched up a few dips in the plaster the roller didn't quite get.

We are thrilled with the results. The room seemed like it got loads of light before but now... *sigh*.
It's the complete opposite of the apartment we were living in before which, literally, only got minutes of sunlight a day.
Another reason we are thrilled is because of how it makes the woodwork look. Honestly, we weren't in love with the dark wood when we first moved in but now we adore it contrasted against the pale grey.

We also painted the brick fireplace surround, a slightly darker grey called Grey Ghost by Dutch Boy, but I forgot to take a picture before it was obstructed by the rubble of our current project.
So many projects!

Getting our Christmas craft on

As tradition dictates, we had to bust out the glitter and glue for our Christmas Craft. Since my mom wanted to try out a white tree this year we all had great fun making a new set of ornaments. Even my dad got involved - and ended up with a beard full of glitter :D

For a DIY Christmas Craft check these out:

A month of home-making

It's kinda strange. It feels a bit like we moved in last weekend but also a bit like we moved in ages ago. We've been doing so much dreaming, changing of this and that, AND PIPE SNAKING. Fortunately, our pipes are now clean and our drains are draining, but on a side note - remember that feminine products and rubbers should NOT be flushed. The future owners of your house will thank you. However, this post is not about removing giant quantities of roots and yuck from pipes. It is simply a teensy peek into what's been going on lately on the Home front.

We picked out some colors and painted some walls! Every, I repeat, EVERY wall in our house is the same color. While it isn't the worst wall color, and really is quite liveable, it also reminds me of baby poop. Yummm.
Want to know what we picked? They are Dutchboy colors: Willow Springs, Grey Ghost, and Grey Marble. You can see the chosen chip taped to the brick in the next picture. Which brings me to...

The stove! We found a wood burning stove! Brand new and on the cheap! It was actually turning out to be a challenge to find one petite enough to fit in the fireplace while also not sticking out into the room 3 feet. We found one though. And it has a WINDOW. That window. It just makes my heart so happy. I did not expect to find a small stove with a window and I am thankful that we did. Seriously, i just want to fast forward to next year when we are using it. You see, currently it is just sitting there looking mighty adorable because routing the flue up our lofty chimney is a project for this summer.

And finally, a blurry picture (sorry!) of me sanding. This was taken just a few days after we moved in because I could not handle that black hole of a door one moment longer. You will do a little happy jig when you see what color I painted it but that will have to wait till it gets warmer. The cold moved in before I got a final coat of color on.

So there you have a  [small] peek into our happening. Onward we go!
Wish us luck for this weekend! We are going to try our hand at drywall. Tearing out and replacing an old, water damaged plaster wall.

This is our pet, Donkey.
He is a small and annoying (hence the name) house fly that moved in the same day we did.
He is a social little creature, following us into the living room, or finding us when we are upstairs. In the picture he is hanging out with me while I worked on a few things in the craft room.

done. almost.

Staring at the calendar, my logical self says,
"girl, there are 9 days left til your college career is completed. You can totally do this."
But the emotional part of me, the part that is so hard to ignore, feels like those 9 days are actually 9 decades that will ever be looming.

And so I sit. Feeling drained and overwhelmed. Thinking about the papers I need to write, the projects that need to be completed, the Christmas party I need to put together.
Are we even going to get around to setting up our beloved tree this year? Because all I actually want to do is paint the walls in my house.
